Am I A Suitable Candidate For Laser Surgery?

Your glasses measurements

The lasik procedure can correct shortsightedness up to -9.00 diopters, farsightedness up to +3.00 diopters and astigmatism up to -5.00 diopters. If you do not know what your measurements are we advise that you come in for a free assessment which will determine these measurements.

Your age

Glasses measurements usually become stable around the age of 20. We advise that you should be at least 20 years of age and your glasses measurements should have been stable for at least one year.

People over the age of 45 years are suitable for lasik but they will need reading glasses after surgery. People over the age of 65 are less suitable as their chances of developing cataract in the next 10 years are high and this will change their measurements.

Contact lenses

People wearing soft contact lenses need to have the lenses out for 3 days prior to the final assessment. People wearing hard or gas permeable lenses need to have the lenses out for at least one month prior to the final assessment. Glasses or temporary soft contact lenses can be used during this time

Other factors

Women should not be pregnant or breast-feeding. There should be no other disorders of the eye, particularly no disorders of the cornea such as keratoconus.

Dr Mesham will perform a detailed examination including technical factors such as eye pressure, corneal shape and corneal thickness before a final assessment of your suitability for laser can be made.
